There are many different ways to open a pipe tobacco tin. One of the easiest is to use your thumb and forefinger like you would open a can of soda. Another method is to use a can opener, but you need to be careful that it doesn't cut the seal inside the tin too much.
The third method is what I prefer: use a spoon or something similar to pry off the top of the tin. This method works well if you have one of those tin lids with a plastic screw-on ring around it, and it also works with some other containers where there is a metal lid and plastic screw-on ring around it.
Open tins last longer than tubed tins because they are not sealed, so the moisture will evaporate from the tobacco over time. It's a good idea to keep your open tins in a cool place like your bedroom or bathroom, where it’s dark and air-conditioned to prevent spoilage from light and heat exposure.
Tubed tins are sealed with an airtight seal for freshness and long-term storage by the manufacturer, so there’s no way for them to dry out or become stale. That said, when you buy a tubed tin of tobacco, it’s going to be completely dry inside unless you remember to open it up every year or two before adding water.
In addition to this of course the issue depends on other factors. Smoking technique, type of tobacco, and how often you smoke can affect how long the can lasts.
Age Of Tobacco: Generally speaking, older tobaccos have more oxidative compounds which means they are less stable than younger tobaccos. The longer the tobacco has been open, the more oxidized it will be. This means that older tins will have a shorter shelf life than newer ones.
Tobacco Types: Navy Cut, Virginia and Burley tobaccos tend to stay fresher longer than aromatics like Latakia or Oriental blends. On average, navy cut tobaccos will have a shelf life of about 2 years while Virginia and Burley tobaccos will last about 3 years before oxidizing completely.
Smoking Technique: A fresh tin will stay fresh for about 6 months if it is smoked sparingly (1-2 bowls per week) and kept in an airtight container at room temperature out of direct sunlight. After 6 months, the tin may begin to lose its flavor if not smoked again within 6-12 months or if left open at room
